My Favorite Stephen King Books: The Dark Side

Filed under: Stephen King Books - 08 May 2012  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

When I first started reading The Dark Side, I already was familiar with Stephen King books. Although I enjoy reading horror literature, horror books need to have more than some explicit frightening scenes. Well, I can surely say that Stephen King books did not turn out to be a disappointment for me. I absolutely love The Dark Side! Still, I must share with you my experience with this story, one of the many Stephen King books published until now. With the first pages of The Dark Side, I found this work to be rather complicated, as there were so many events and characters, that I really could not understand the story. Well, when I got to finish reading the first chapter I could not let this book out of hand. It began to be so captivating that I kept on reading The Dark Side until the final page and I can honestly say that this novel is one of the best Stephen King books. Although it can be extremely hard to create a top of the best Stephen King books, there is no way I will ever leave The Dark Side aside.

The Dark Side is one of the Stephen King books written between November 1987 and March 1989. The book is the story of a writer who manages to get involved into a very complicated, but really interesting situation, in which he, at least apparently, has no fault. When reading the story, you will find exactly why I said apparently. One of the best Stephen King books, The Dark Side has been, in a way, inspired by Stephen King’s own life, as at the beginning of his career, the famous writer has published under a false name. The same thing will be done by the hero of this novel, a horror book writer who manages to publish some of his most successful stories under the pseudonym of George Stark. Thad Beaumont is the name of the real writer. The man realizes that his works published under the name of Stark are best sellers, while the stories he published with his own name never managed to become successful.

When Thad and his wife Liz have their first children, a twin boy and girl, the author decides to make a change in his life and starts publishing once again with his own name. However, his decision is influenced by the fact that Thad’s real identity is uncovered by a man who asks money in exchange of his silence. So, Thad who was anyway determined to put an end to this story, makes the public announcement and never writes again under the name of Stark. Well, years after that moment, consequences start being felt by everyone. A series of murders are committed, and they all seem to be connected in a way or another to Thad. As you can see, this is one of the Stephen King books that just have to be read.

Danse Macabre is an impressive book by famous horror author, Stephen King. Danse Macabre was first published in 1981. Danse Macabre was actually inspired by many films, as well as comics and book, and, in general, the influence that the horror genre has in a society. The book was republished in 2010, when a new essay was added to Danse Macabre, named What’s Scary. Danse Macabre is more like a study than a novel. In Danse Macabre, Stephen King decides to share various aspects about the psychology of terror, including informal academic insights and many very interesting facts. In Danse Macabre, Stephen King also shares the history of the horror genre, examining texts dating back in the 19th century.

Stephen King has decided to dedicate some of his books to people who inspired him and his work or life, in a way or another. Well, Danse Macabre was dedicated to someone who forever changed the author’s life, the editor of his first five books. Bill Thompson helped Stephen King become famous and it seems that the author showed his gratitude by dedicating Danse Macabre to the man who has also given King the idea to write this book. The author claimed that Bill Thompson called him one day and told him it would be a great idea to write a book about the horror phenomena, the way King saw it. And writing Danse Macabre surely was a great decision for Stephen King, as the book was worldwide appreciated.

The style that Stephen King uses in Danse Macabre is a causal, non-linear one. The introduction of the book actually debates the reasons that Stephen King had in writing Danse Macabre. The book talks about various situations and events, while by the end of Danse Macabre you are going to find out that Stephen King has classified the horror genre in three parts. The famous author talks about terror, horror and revolution, while, in his opinion, terror is the finest element of the three. The way Stephen King explains this whole phenomenon is extremely interesting. “I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader,” the famous author claimed. “But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot horrify, I’ll go for the gross-out. I’m not proud,” Stephen King added.
